About the role – Kōrero mō te tūranga
New Zealand Red Cross is mid-transformation. We’re modernising how we operate, lifting our technology capability, and building a team that can hold the line while we move fast. That means we need a Senior IT Support Engineer who doesn’t just fix things — they improve things. Systematically. Permanently.
This isn’t a keep-the-lights-on-and-close-tickets role. You’ll be the senior escalation point, the person who owns root cause, the one who looks at a recurring incident and decides: not on my watch.
You’ll work closely with our outsourced service desk, our IT Operations Lead, and a small, tight team that cares a lot about doing things properly. And yes — the work actually matters. We’re part of the world’s largest humanitarian network. The uptime you protect supports real people doing real good.
The team
Small team. High standards. Genuinely good people.
We’re in the middle of a digital transformation — which means there’s real work to be done, real ownership to be had, and real problems worth solving. We move fast, we support each other, and we argue about the right way to do things before going and doing them properly.
What you’ll do
You’ll be the senior technical brain across end-user computing, Microsoft 365, identity, cloud services and network connectivity. Key areas include:
- Senior escalation point for complex incidents and problems — own root cause, drive fixes, coordinate vendors
- Lead incident and problem management, including trend analysis, post-incident reviews and preventative improvements
- Maintain and improve SOPs, technical runbooks and the knowledge base — you leave things better than you found them
- Oversee onboarding/offboarding technical processes, endpoint deployments and asset management
- Keep critical systems (identity, M365, key line-of-business apps) available, secure and performing across all sites
- Contribute to technology standards and patterns — endpoint baselines, Entra ID/Azure configurations, security-by-design
- Lead or deliver ICT project workstreams (migrations, upgrades, security improvements)
- Identify automation opportunities (scripting) and build reliability and efficiency into how we operate
- Produce operational reporting and use the insights to actually do something about what you find
- Cover for the IT Operations Lead when needed — you’re trusted to hold the fort
What you bring
The stuff we actually care about.
We’re looking for 5+ years in IT support and engineering — someone who’s comfortable at senior level, knows their way around a Microsoft environment, and brings the kind of calm, methodical energy that makes everyone around them better.
- Advanced Microsoft 365 and Azure administration — you know Entra ID, endpoint management and M365 workloads deeply
- Strong ITSM fundamentals — incident, problem and change management aren’t just words to you
- Endpoint management — standardised builds, modern device management (Intune), deployment and lifecycle
- Networking fundamentals — DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, VPN; enough to diagnose, enough to coordinate
- Security and governance basics in Microsoft environments — MFA, conditional access, least privilege, device compliance
- Scripting ability — PowerShell at minimum; you automate the boring stuff
- Bonus: experience working alongside or managing outsourced service desks. You know how to make that relationship work.
The vibe check
You might be our person if…
You take the work seriously and the drama less so. You don’t just close incidents — you close the loop. You can explain a complex technical problem to a non-technical stakeholder without making them feel stupid. You have opinions about documentation (good ones). And you genuinely want to work somewhere where what you do actually helps people.
You’re also the kind of person who, when the IT Operations Lead is on leave, doesn’t need a handbook — you just get on with it.
